"Space Captain" is a web-based 2D arcade game developed by "XR Interactive" that combines thrilling space battles with festive Eid greetings. The game offers an immersive experience as players control a spaceship to defend the moon from falling asteroids. Created to elevate Eid celebrations, Space Captain was launched as part of an NFC-integrated smart Eid greeting card. Users can scan the card’s QR code or tap their phone to access a custom website with an "AR open-world experience", where they can "play Space Captain" and explore additional interactive features.

Project Goal

"Space Captain" was designed to be more than just an arcade game. It represents our mission to merge traditional celebrations with modern interactive experiences. Our goal was to entertain users during Eid while introducing them to the possibilities of NFC-integrated gaming and AR technology.

Concept & Gameplay

In "Space Captain," players control a spaceship tasked with protecting the moon from random asteroid attacks. Asteroids of various sizes and colors fall unpredictably, requiring players to stay alert, maneuver skillfully, and shoot precisely to keep the moon safe. The game begins with three lives, and each time an asteroid hits the moon, it takes damage. If an asteroid collides with the spaceship, the ship is destroyed, respawning at a random position and costing the player one life. Points are earned for each destroyed asteroid, scaling with asteroid size, while missed asteroids that hit the moon result in point deductions, adding a layer of strategy. The game ends when all lives are lost, making the core objective to safeguard the moon while managing limited lives effectively.

Challenges & Solutions

• One of the main challenges was designing a game that remains engaging and challenging without becoming frustrating. Striking the right balance in difficulty and implementing smooth respawn mechanics were essential to keeping players invested without causing frustration. To achieve this, we focused on creating easy-to-understand mechanics that allow players of all ages to enjoy defending the moon from asteroids, keeping gameplay accessible yet exciting.

• To provide a seamless experience, especially for users accessing the game via NFC technology, we prioritized making "Space Captain" lightweight and web-compatible. By leveraging Unity’s web capabilities, we optimized particle effects and animations, making the game both visually appealing and efficient across a range of devices, from desktop to mobile. This approach ensures quick load times and smooth performance for players.

• A key goal was to celebrate Eid in a modern, interactive way, making the game joyful and meaningful for players. We incorporated festive Eid greeting animations that appear whenever an asteroid is destroyed, adding a unique cultural touch. This feature enriches the gameplay, making it more memorable and resonant for players celebrating the occasion.

• We also wanted to offer players a simple, intuitive way to access the game. To do this, we developed an NFC and QR code system, allowing users to access "Space Captain" through a quick tap or scan of a "smart Eid greeting card". Additionally, we created an augmented reality (AR) experience on the game’s website, offering an immersive, Eid-themed environment that expands the game's cultural context. This innovation showcases XR Interactive’s expertise in interactive media, positioning us as a leader in NFC and AR-based solutions.
